Hello readers, I have big news to share with you! I produce and host a new weekly podcast called Aviation News Talk. which iPhone and iPad users can find here in the Apple Podcasts app. Yesterday I was surprised to discover that that show is now #1 in the Aviation category of Apple iTunes! I hope you will listen to the show, and if you like it, tell all of your pilot friends about it.
If you're unfamiliar with podcasts, I'll explain what they are further down. For those familiar with podcasts, Aviation News Talk is a 30-40 minute weekly show that is strictly about General Aviation, where I bring my over 40 years of flying experience to help teach pilots and future pilots to fly safely. The show starts with about a half dozen current GA news stories. In addition to general news, I try to include international GA news, and stories about light sport and experimental aircraft. And of course, I sometimes include my opinion on a few news stories...no surprise there! Here are links where you can subscribe. I've included more details about the show below the links.
After the news, I discuss a general pilot tip, and I try to include something in that tip for beginners and experts alike. Occasionally, I discuss some details on operating the G1000 and Cirrus Perspective glass cockpits and flying GPS approaches, but when I do, I put it at the end of the show. Don’t worry about me doing a deep dive on the G1000 and Cirrus Perspective on the show; the place where I do that is in my books and my online courses. Incidentally, you can now access all the courses for just $29.95 month (or $299/year which also includes a free half hour consulting call on any topic). Finally, each Aviation News Talk podcast wraps up with listener emails and questions I've been sent in doing the prior week. The show usually comes out on Tuesdays, though occasionally I'll add an extra episode later in the week. For example, last week I dedicated an episode to an interview of Rod Rakic, founder of FlyOtto.com, an on-demand charter service, and we discussed FlyOtto's offer to United Airlines...an offer which would have avoided their ugly passenger de-boarding in Chicago last week.
I started the Aviation News Talk podcast because I'm an active flight instructor who flies 5-6 days a week. Frequently while flying, I encounter something where I think "I should share this with other pilots." Although I'm a cohost on the AirplaneGeeks.com podcast, that show also covers the airlines and military aviation, and there's just not enough time on that show to share everything. Plus, I know some pilots are less interested in the airlines and military aviation. Hence, I created the Aviation News Talk podcast for GA pilot enthusiasts, professional pilots who love GA, and people interested in becoming a pilot. What's a podcast?
A podcast is an audio show, usually spread across a series of episodes, which can be downloaded from the Internet and listened to either on a computer or a smartphone such as an iPhone or Android phone. If you have a smartphone or tablet, the easiest way to find and listen to podcasts is through a dedicated podcasting app. On the iPhone, most people use Apple's Podcasts app. If you don't see it on your phone, just search for it in the App Store on your iPhone. There are dozens of other apps available. If you have an Android phone, you could use the Google Play Music app, but I've found it's a little cumbersome to use for podcasts. Here's a list of 10 podcasting apps for Android.
Most podcasts, like Aviation News Talk, are totally free! Though if you choose, some podcasters have set up ways where you can make a small donation to help support their efforts.
