If you’re like me, you’re looking for a little comic relief from the nonstop news on the COVID-19 coronavirus. Not that I’m not taking it seriously; I do. I started sheltering at home 8 days ago, while in my county, sheltering at home only became mandatory yesterday.
I do a week aviation podcast called Aviation News Talk, and usually I focus on recent aviation news and a pilot skill or safety issue. But this week, I noticed that I had a larger than usual collection of weird aviation stories. Generally, I’ll use one of those stories in my podcast, which meant the other ten or so strange stories would never be used. And that seemed like a waste in these interesting times we’re living in.
So I called up Flying Magazine’s Senior Editor Rob Mark, as he has a great sense of humor and is usually willing to engage in a little hijinks. Together, we read through the stories feature recent strange crashes and stupid criminals committing crimes involving planes and airports. Along the way, we offered commentary and tips on the right way to fly an airplane. We also talked about how sheltering at home has changed our lives and how it will impact people who have been training to become airline pilots.
Also, I found a number of stories of crashes and near crashes involving iPads. You’d be surprised at the number of ways these otherwise helpful tools can gum up the works.
